Kathleen F. Quinn

Kathleen Quinn died peacefully on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 of complications from a stroke. Kathleen a/k/a Vera to her Irish relations was 80 years old and surrounded by family at the time of her passing. Kathleen was born in 1938 in Ballydehob, a small town along the West Coast of Ireland. The daughter of P.J. Hurley and Julia Calanan Hurley, who owned a shop in town. She told tales of a happy upbringing working in the shop, tending the cows and playing around with her beloved brother Sean Hurley and sister, Maureen Neville. She followed Sean and Maureen to London, England when she was 15 and then emigrated to America on the Queen Mary a few years later with “$5.00 in her pocket”. A tireless worker who believed in education, Kathleen worked at the telephone company in New York City while taking classes in the evening. It was there she met and later married the love of her life John Quinn in 1958. They spent the next 60 years happily raising their 7 children, 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren (named below). Kathleen was a loving wife and fun-loving mom and grandmother, a caring and attentive sister, aunt, cousin and friend and conveyed a welcoming spirit to all she met. She enjoyed traveling and relayed funny stories of travels with her husband, her brother Sean and his wife Neitza, her sister Maureen and her husband Tony, her sister-in-law Nancy and her husband Bernie, and an array of vacations with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed visitors and everyone loved her shepherd’s pie, Irish soda bread, her cheesecake and the fun games she would organize around the table. She was a long time communicant of Saint Ann’s Roman Catholic Church. She had many friends from tennis, golf, the “Y”, the gym and a crowd who met at Jim’s Burger Haven on Saturday mornings for many years. Kathleen is survived by her husband of 60 years, John and her sister-in-law Neitza Hurley; her children and their spouses Denis Quinn, John “Jay” and Suzanne Quinn, Maureen and Richard Wood, Eileen Quinn and Bo Yahara, Kristine Quinn, Michael and Christine Quinn and Patrick and Allison Quinn; her grandchildren Mitchell and Gizem Quinn, Douglas, Dylan and Luke Quinn, Tara Wood, Hal and Emily Steiner, IV, Katie, Kara and Brian Quinn, Sophia and Max Jimenez, and Delaney and Ashlyn Quinn; and great grandchildren Kai and Ash Quinn, Hal Steiner, V, and Zara, Kai and Athena Thobani. She was also Aunt Kathy or Aunt Vera to a plethora of nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. We will always carry her memory in our hearts.
